This is the story of our adventures -- every day and extraordinary; our dreams -- tiny and grand; our gardens -- ornamental and sustaining; this is the story of our journey.  We are a family of four living a mindful, simple life here in Los Angeles County.  We are green, conscious, and forward thinking.  We keep an eye on the past because some of the best things have already been done and bear repeating.  Walk and talk with us, have a glass of wine, taste a peach or a tomato, blow some bubbles and watch them drift up over the canyon ridge.  Enjoy!

i thought that maybe

if i opened a new post window and started to type, added some pictures, words would come

i also thought that my 5-year old would be asleep an hour ago.

and the two mis-notions are not even related.  or they are.

you can color today's harvest green -- tomatillos, green zebras, and one funky little green melon that I'm sure is ripe because her fragrance has scented my entire kitchen.  but this is a measly little harvest for a day in september.
there is still plenty to come
figs
more tomatillos
(hopefully more tomatoes though they seem to be taking a break)
pumpkins

whatever this is (i'm hoping butternut squash, thinking late pumpkin)
more blackberries
and all sorts of fall stuff -- carrots that are finally sprouting, beans that I just put in, lettuce and spinach to come... who knows, the weather is so weird!

I know!!! What crazy weather! Is it summer, fall or winter?!?!?

Hey, can I do carrots right now? If I plant them like tomorrow morning in some planters? I have empty planters from pulling my peas.

My beans are sprouting, though a ton of them died while we were out of town. I think it was thanks to the gardener trimming the giant bougainvillea that was right above it. I had to pull like a lb of bougainvillea branches out of my poor beans...

This sure has been a weird year for weather!

I opened up your blog to see if you'd posted anything new (I thought you might appreciate that instead of me needing to be reminded to read new posts!) anyway, Liam saw the top pictures and took a quick breath in, saying "Those are my friends!!!". So cute!

I just had a ton of delicious fresh figs at my sister's house, from her tree. She took some creme fraiche, added some vanilla and honey and had it as a dip for the figs. So good. I get figs in my CSA box this week, I can't wait. I'm thinking I'll be snagging a bunch more from my sister, though. Fig, caramelized onions and goat cheese tart, here I come!
